There are four versions of each page on this website: the default version is optimised for modern advanced browsers, such as recent editions of Netscape, Mozilla, Konqueror or Opera, and for text browsers such as Lynx and also for search engines and other robots. The third is specifically for version 5 of Microsoft Internet Explorer running on Windows, and the fourth and final version is for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. There is a basic stylesheet in CSS level 1, another in CSS level 2 (both valid) and one for each of versions 5 and 6 of Microsoft Internet Explorer, tailored to the way that browser interprets CSS. Javascript is used with each of the stylesheets other than the basic one to adjust dimensions of images and other parts of the page. Javascript is also used to confirm the browser being used is as given by the User-Agent header, and to break any framesets imposed by linking pages.
Javascript is never essential to use this website, and it is only used at all where client side scripting provides a significant advantage over the equivalent server-side scripts, which are also in place. Server-side scripts are written in PHP.
The common content across the pages of this site is maintained using a template written in m4. Processing of the template and uploading files is controlled by a Makefile.
We are proud to have a website which retains such a consistent style across a diverse range of platforms while remaining user-friendly and intuitive in its application. It is fully compliant with all applicable standards, and uses standardised and valid code, all of which is hand written. It is accessible to Level A of the WAI's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
